Consumer Cellular is once again offering  a grand prize Caribbean cruise for those that enter the contest and three other loved ones. You can enter here and also check out some of last year’s entries. You have until August 1, 2011 to enter, so if you want to tell the world about your wonderful grandmother or grandfather, or post a video about them you have just a few more days to do so.  Good luck to those that enter!

I just read an article written by my friend Eric G. Young in which he commented on an article he read by the Harvard Business Management Tip of the Day.   While my soul searching is nothing compared to what Eric relates, I wanted to comment on doing what I do to keep myself sane (at least semi-sane anyways) while working in the sometimes crazy world of law.

I have always worked long hours at what I do and I still love it.  I don’t see myself ever leaving it behind.  During the summer months and early fall, I take on a couple part-time jobs which adds more work and  seems to some even crazier than my usual work routine.  I do this for two reasons.

1.   My best friend of over 33 years is very involved in and very passionate about her job, which is working for county fairs inputting the fair entries, assisting with setting up the exhibit rooms, coordinating the judges and clerks and making sure that all who want to enter their prized homemade items are entered and displayed.  The amount of work this requires is unbelievable and takes many volunteers to help pull it off.  With the California budget cuts this year, it will take even more.  I have lost count of the years I have been helping her out, and while I sometimes want to tell her no more, no more, I continue to help because that is what friends do, help each other out in good times and when times are tough.

2.  The other reason I do this is more on a selfish note.  I enjoy doing something different than what I usually do, and that is working as a family law paralegal.  Helping others out, namely my best friend, even if it is for only a brief time makes me feel good.  Don’t get me wrong, helping her is not easy work and there are some days we will put in 14 hour or longer days to get things done, but when it is all done, you can sit back and see the fruits of your labor and you get to see how much the people who have entered love to see where they placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd and the public who come to see the entries and how much they enjoy them.   You don’t always get to see that in family law as everyone cannot be a winner when it comes to the law.

I agree with Eric that you need to find what you are good at and you need to like, if not love what you do to continue doing it.  I know I have.
