It seems that former paralegal Patricia Baddeley-Meehan was very trusted by her employers and was given carte blanche with the firms bank accounts. She was able to embezzle over $1.7 million from 2003 to 2007. Ms. Baddely-Meehan pled guilty to defrauding a prior employer, mail fraud and 1 count of filing a false tax return.

While on bail as reported in April 2009, she worked for two clothing shops and stole over $13,000 worth of clothing from them. There was a bail revoke hearing set in April 2009 on this charge, but I could find no further information at this time on whether her bail was revoked or if she was charged with this theft as well.

This month she was sentenced and will serve nearly four years in federal prison for stealing more than $1.7 million from the South Windsor law firm where she worked to support her casino habit. She could have been sentenced to 43 years in prison, so it would seem she got off a little easy here. She will also be on 3 years probation when she is released and was ordered to pay restitution and to pay $123,000 in federal back taxes on what she stole.

This story reminds us all that giving one person in a law office the total responsibility of the finances of the firms, can result in missing money. In this case, Berman and Russo, the firm that Ms. Baddeley-Meehan embezzled from, did just that. While I am not saying it was the firms fault, it serves to remind us all of just how easy it can be to take advantage of employers who put their full trust in their employees.
