The Oregon State Bar recently printed an article in JD Supra detailing how you can prevent employees from stealing from law practices. The information is great and I thought I would share it with all of you. You can find this article here. Even if you are not responsible for any money coming in to the office or going out, it is always a good idea to know how you can be aware of how attorneys can be taken advantage of.

If you are in a smaller office where many tasks are assigned to paralegals, this article explains the many ways to set up the bank accounts so that there is accountability for the money coming into the business as well as going out.

First, let me say Happy New Year! I took a look at the California Labor Market Info today and found that paralegal jobs will increase over the next six years by 6,500, or 26.3% in California. As a paralegal, this is good to hear.

The other interesting tidbit in this research, was that there are over 60,000 employers in California who employ paralegals. Also of interest, is that paralegals earn on average $27.63 an hour, with the top hourly earnings of $33.60. These figures do not take into consideration benefits and employer taxes though.

As a paralegal who was laid off in 2009, I believe that employers are not going to be paying the high wages as California has one of the highest cost of living indexes. For employers to continue to use paralegals, and they must in order to succeed, I believe that contract paralegals or virtual paralegals will be utilized more and more by attorneys.

As many of you know, I began my own virtual paralegal business this year, Virtual Legal Consultants. Marketing and getting this business off the ground has been challenging and fun. I look forward to the new year and the growth and change of our legal arena.

The Missing Link is not a secret society. It’s simply a group of legal professionals who saw a need to help people who are suffering physical abuse at the hands of the very people who are supposed to love them.

As reported in ParalegalGateway, this group of paralegals and attorneys began assisting victims of domestic violence in 2005.

The Missing Link is currently working to incorporate as a non-profit group so that it can begin collecting donations to try to help offset the financial burdens faced by many of its clients. In Duval County, it costs $409 just to file for dissolution of marriage. Even the payment option the county offers is often too much for many of these victims.

I applaud these paralegals and the attorneys for giving back to their community in Jacksonville, Florida. Domestic violence continues to be a serious problem in all walks of life, as evidenced by the recent Rhianna and Chris Brown incident. For more information on The Missing Link, please click here.
